How Do Medicaid Credentialing and Billing Work for Georgia Behavioral Health Providers?

In Georgia, you enroll in Medicaid online through GAMMIS, get credentialed once through the DCH Credentialing Verification Organization, then contract with each managed care plan you want to work with. After that, every claim needs a note that supports it. You must also revalidate your enrollment on time or your claims can stop.

Step 1: Get your NPI

Before you enroll, your agency and clinicians need National Provider Identifiers (NPIs). You apply for them through CMS's NPPES system. Keep the names and addresses on your NPI records the same as on your other applications.

Step 2: Enroll in Georgia Medicaid

The Georgia Department of Community Health (DCH) runs Medicaid. Its GAMMIS site says providers enroll online using the Enrollment Wizard. Approved providers get a Medicaid provider number.

If you also want to provide DBHDD community behavioral health services, DBHDD's process comes first. DBHDD says that once its application (and any site visit) is approved, you are told to complete the DCH online application.

Step 3: Credentialing through the CVO

DCH uses one central credentialing process for providers in Georgia Families and Georgia Families 360. A Credentialing Verification Organization (CVO) checks licenses, databases, malpractice insurance and more. A committee then makes the decision and shares it with the managed care plans.

DCH says complete applications get a decision within 45 calendar days. Incomplete ones are sent back, which slows things down. Gainwell Technologies helps providers with credentialing at 1-800-766-4456.

Step 4: Contract with each plan

Credentialing is not the same as a contract. DCH says contracting questions go to each care management organization (CMO). Today those are Amerigroup, CareSource and Peach State Health Plan. Each plan decides on its own contract and may have its own billing rules.

Step 5: Revalidate on time

Federal rules require states to revalidate every provider's enrollment at least every five years. DCH suspended providers who had not revalidated, effective July 1, 2026. Claims for services on or after that date were not paid.

DCH says that after you revalidate, your effective date is the date you submitted. There is no retro enrollment. If you don't revalidate within 30 days of the suspension letter, you get a termination notice. DCH posts a public list of past-due providers on GAMMIS.

Billing basics that protect you

For DBHDD services, the Provider Manual says every progress note must include the matching procedure code and any modifier. For time-based services, notes need a time-in and time-out.

The manual also covers rounding. You may bill one 15-minute unit when at least half the unit was provided, and your agency must have a written rounding policy. Read the manual's exact rules for each service.

Georgia's Medicaid manuals are posted on GAMMIS and updated often. Always bill from the current version.

Screen staff and expect reviews

Before anyone bills, check the HHS-OIG exclusion list. OIG says excluded people can't be paid by federal health programs, and it urges employers to check new hires and current staff.

Also expect reviews. The DCH Office of Inspector General has a Program Integrity Unit that does utilization reviews of Medicaid claims and looks into fraud, waste and abuse. Its Office of Audits also audits providers. Clean notes and clean staff files are your best defense.

Who to call

Keep these numbers handy. They come from DCH and DBHDD pages, and they can change:

  • GAMMIS Provider Enrollment: (770) 325-9600 or (800) 766-4456.
  • Credentialing help (Gainwell Technologies, per DCH): 1-800-766-4456.
  • CMO contracting: Amerigroup 678-587-4840, CareSource 1-855-202-1058, Peach State 1-866-874-0633.
  • DBHDD provider questions: 404-657-2252.

Key takeaways

  • Get NPIs first, then enroll in Medicaid through the GAMMIS Enrollment Wizard.
  • DCH credentials you once through its CVO; complete files get a decision within 45 calendar days.
  • Credentialing is not a contract; each CMO decides separately.
  • Miss revalidation and claims can stop, with no retro enrollment.
  • Each note must support the claim, including code, modifier and times.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Georgia Medicaid credentialing take?

DCH says complete CVO applications get a decision within 45 calendar days. Incomplete ones are returned and take longer. Enrollment and plan contracting are separate steps with their own timelines.

Do I have to credential with each managed care plan?

DCH's CVO credentials you once and shares the decision with the CMOs. You still need to contract with each plan you want to join.

How often must Georgia Medicaid providers revalidate?

Federal rules require revalidation at least every five years. Check GAMMIS for your due date and the past-due list.

What happens if a claim does not match the note?

Reviewers may deny or take back the payment. CMS says never to bill for services you did not document or at a higher level than you provided.
